The early '70s were a dark time for the Legion...

After losing the lead in Adventure Comics in 1969 and the backup in Action Comics in 1970, the Legion of Super-Heroes was relegated to infrequent appearances in Superboy the following year. With the retirement of editor Mort Weisinger from DC Comics, the Legion had lost the man who had guided its publication since its very inception. It looked as if the Legion was doomed to be a dying series.

And then the fans stepped in...

Long a source of support for the Legion, its fans weren't content to see it die. Beginning what was then the start of organized Legion fandom, thirteen year old Mike Flynn wrote a letter to DC Comics expressing his displeasure at the move and invited other fans who felt the same way to join him in forming a Legion Fan Club. After the issue saw publication, over two hundred readers answered his call. Together they began an organization whose sole purpose was to see the Legion return to its former glory. A letter writing campaign was begun to persuade the powers that be to return the Legion to its status as a regular feature. Over time, more and more Legion stories appeared. Eventually, it moved into the title spot with Superboy, before replacing him there entirely. Within five years Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes was DC Comic's best-selling title, and none of it would have been possible without a campaign begun by its fans.

Within these pages you will find a chronicle of the earliest appearances of the Legion of Super-Heroes within Superboy's title, starting with their first post-Silver Age appearance in Superboy # 172 through to the very last issue featuring Superboy as a part of the title, # 258. What began as Superboy starring the Legion of Super-Heroes would become Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes before it would eventually become just The Legion of Super-Heroes. After twenty-one years, the Legion would finally get a title of its own.

For now, let us set the time bubble for the 2970s, and marvel at the world which awaits us in the future. And least we forget...

Long Live The Legion!
